Everyone wants gold, presumably because it is shiny and yellow, and people like shiny things. However, virtual gold is not shiny, but is still much in demand. In World of Warcraft, gold is needed to buy a wide variety of useful items so you need to get as much of it as possible.
When you kill a creature in World of Warcraft, it will usually drop an item or some gold for you to pick up. This is beside the usual experience points awarded for victory in combat. Experience is good as well, as it allows you to level up more quickly, and so become stronger and more easily able to defeat your next combat challenge or quest.
Sometimes you can get gold as a reward for completing quests for various non-player characters (NPCs). Talk to everyone you meet, and some of them will ask you to do things, like collecting a number of items or killing a monster. If you do this, you will be rewarded, often with gold or a useful or valuabe item. Sometimes you will only revcieve experience, but this is good as well, as the experience gained allows you to level up and so become stronger for your next battle or quest.
Quests are not always fast or easy, like killling, and so you may want to find another way to profit. In this case you need to find someone willing to give you gold. Nobody will just hand it to you, so you need to find a way to convince people to give it to you. The best way to do this is to act as a merchant, buying and selling goods, either direct to people or through an auction house.
If you aren't much good as a merchant, you might find work as a mercenary, offering to help people out on difficult quests in exchange for gold. This is extremely unlikely though, as people play the for fun, and it is always easy to find someone willing to quest with you just for the experience of the quest. Otherwise, why would they be playing?
